When Chrysanthemum and Mulberry(leaf) are combined then their functions are: to clear heat from the exterior. Mulberry has a sweet and bitter flavor. It clears heat from the lungs and stops the coughing. Chrysanthemum disperses upper burner Wind-Heat, including that which affects the eyes. When Self-heal is combined with them then this formula becomes a strong Liver Tonic. The Liver opens into the eyes, disorders of the Liver may cause disorders of eyes. For instance, emotional disturbance and stress cause Liver-Energy stagnation, which can turn into Liver-Heat or Liver-Fire, exogenous pathogenic Wind-Heat may disturb the Energy movement of the Liver and Gallbladder meridians of the head and cause disorders of the eyes, if the Liver-Yin and Liver-Blood are insufficient, they may fail to nourish the eyes, and cause dryness of the eyes and blurred vision.
