Nasal Itching

 Part One (1\4)

Nasal itching, refers to an itching which comes from inside the nose, and itching can bring some relief by Allaah's permission.

Etiology

The primary cause is due to wind and heat, the distinguishing factor to determine whether its wind or heat is if the the itch is more severe than pain then it indicates the pathogenic factor is wind, which is predominant than heat. And if the heat is predominant than wind than the pain is more severe than the itch.

There are Four Imbalances of Nasal Itching

1. Wind-Heat Invading the Lungs

When Wind-Heat invades the body, the Lungs are the first organ attacked by this pathogenic factor. Afterwards the Wind-Heat goes upward and harasses the portal of the lung, which  may lead to nasal itching.

Analysis of Formula

When heat lodges in the Lungs and causes coughing, the appropriate strategy is to clear the heat and disseminate the Lung-Energy. Because the heat is externally contracted and located primarily at the protective level, equal attention must be paid to venting Wind-Heat from the exterior.

Mulberry(leaf) and Chrysanthemum are the chief herbs in this formula, they are cool and light and can clear heat from the exterior. Moreover, the sweet-bitter-cold can clear heat and generate additional body fluids(that were damaged by the excessive heat), the bitter-cold properties will reduce fire and eliminate Damp-Heat. Therefore, Mulberry leaf can remove heat from the Lungs, replenishing the body fluids and stop coughing. While Chrysanthemum can disperse Wind-Heat in the Upper-Burner, removing redness in the eyes and improving one's vision.Forsythia and Menthae are the two deputies, which tonifies the exterior-releasing properties, Two other deputies, Balloon Flower root and Apricot seeds, has descending properties which assist the chief herbs by allowing the Lung-Energy to transport the energy downward to stop coughing. And the last two herbs, clear heat and generate body fluids, reducing thirst and harmonizing the whole formula, Phragmitis rhizoma and licorice root.
